  • Vege Life Cafe, Taman Mayang Jaya PJ

After a sinful weekend of binging in Malacca, I felt like I needed to cleanse my system with some healthier food. So I thought of vegetarian for dinner and mom suggested we try Vege Life Cafe in SS26 since we've never been there before. It offers organic vegetarian food. We're curious and adventurous when it comes to food. :P

We got seated and flipped through the rather extensive menu. Ten varieties of tofu alone. Us being greedy, we ordered a steamed tofu, assam "fish", assorted mushrooms pot and pumpkin with oats. Also, we opted for brown rice to go with the dishes. Prices range between RM10-RM15 per dish for small servings.

Left: some of their recommended dishes, Right: steamed tofu with fried straw mushrooms

Left: assam "fish", Right: assorted mushrooms pot

Left: pumpkin with oats, Right: fresh fruits dessert

The food served were yummy, although the assam fish and pumpkin were a tad salty. Portions were sufficient. We should have stuck to three dishes instead between the three of us. I ended up overeating. And on top of that, there was a complimentary fresh fruits dessert. Our total bill with drinks came up to slightly below RM60. Definitely worth coming back. With so many options to try, it'll take us a few visits to try a bit of everything on their menu. ;)

  • Betty's Midwest Kitchen, Aman Suria PJ

It was a way long overdue visit. Ever since Eve and Kevin opened Betty's Midwest Kitchen a year ago, I've not really sat down for a proper meal to taste their famous specialties. What a good friend indeed, huh? However, some of my family members have had the opportunity to dine at their restaurant and they raved about the good food. Hence, seeing how my elder brother loves the food there, my family agreed to celebrate his birthday with a meal of porky goodness yesterday.

It being a Sunday, I called Eve to enquire the best time to drop by as they do not accept table reservations anymore for weekends as they were always fully booked. Hence, they now only take walk-ins on weekends and seeing that their business is really booming, some customers will either have to be turned down or will need to wait for a table. So, Eve advised that their kitchen is open from 5.30pm for dinner and that we should make it before 7pm which was no problem for us as we dine early.

We ordered their specialties - meatloaf, grilled baby back ribs, soft ribs, Boston butt and pork chop in country gravy. And I've read some reviews saying that their must try drinks are the root beer and lemonade. Prices are comparable to those of Euro Deli and Dave's Pizza Pasta Vino i.e. averaging RM30 for a main. A little on the pricey side for me, however, the portions are generous and the food is absolutely delicious.

The meatloaf - served with a yummy spicy beer sauce

Grilled baby back ribs - served with a sweet bbq sauce

The Boston butt - meat so tender it melts in your mouth

Pork chop in country gravy - nice creamy sauce but pork chop not as tender

    The Earl Grey tea bag

Overall, it was a great meal. Being a regular patron of Euro Deli and Dave's Pizza Pasta Vino, I would definitely drop by to visit Eve and Kevin more often for variety and good food. The service was fast and the ambience is comfortable and inviting. However, I would definitely stay away during peak hours to avoid having to wait for a table. That is one of the main reasons why I've not been to their restaurant sooner. But once you've tried it, you'll definitely be back for more. ;)
