  • Duck King, Jaya One Petaling Jaya

Had an early Father's Day celebration for KW's dad today. KW called up to reserve a table for the 4 of us this morning and managed somehow with what little Mandarin he speaks. The restaurant operated in two shifts for dinner according to the hostess (perhaps for weekends only); 6.00pm and 8.00pm. Not quite sure how that works to their benefit however the place seemed to always be full whenever we happen to pass by during lunch or dinner on weekends. KW figured we should give it a try and definitely to reserve a table in advance.

Having booked for 8.00pm, we walked in at 7.50pm and was shown to our table. Spent a good 10 minutes going through the extensive menu. I thought they would have limited choices i.e. duck, duck or duck. However, flipping through the what must have been more than 10 pages heavily bounded menu with nice glossy pictures, it was more like a seafood restaurant menu. There were definitely plenty of other choices if you do not quite fancy eating duck. After a brief recommendation from the hostess, we ordered a double combination of roast duck and roast pork, a steamed red tilapia in bean sauce, the signature tofu and kailan with stir-fried beef in oyster sauce.

Roast duck (part of the double combination)

Roast pork (part of the double combination)

Steamed red tilapia with bean sauce

Signature tofu - braised tofu with chopped vegetable and mushrooms

Kailan with stir-fried beef in oyster sauce

The food was yummy! They were oily as most Chinese food are, however, they weren't as salty, which was pleasantly good. The roast duck and roast pork were really tender and juicy, while the fish was fresh. I enjoyed it tremendously. However, the ambience was rather noisy as most Chinese restaurants are and the food is a little pricey. Wouldn't mind splurging occasionally but i'd much rather splurge elsewhere if given the chance (based on personal preference). But i would consider coming back again for the yummy food. ;)
